What is Giving Tuesday?

"GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement unleashing the power of radical generosity. GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Since then, it has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity."

What is Global Philadelphia's mission?

GPA was created to assist —and to encourage greater interaction among— the many organizations and people who are engaged in international activity in the Greater Philadelphia Region, to promote the development of an international consciousness within the region, and to enhance the region’s global profile.

The Global Philadelphia Association is a pillar in the Philadelphia community for all things global. Some of our programs and initiatives include...

Sustainable Development Goals Campaign

The United Nations defines the goals as “vital for a recovery that leads to greener, more inclusive economies and stronger, more resilient societies. ” Through valued partnerships with academic, corporate, and individual partners and sponsors, we have been able to not only draw visible attention to the goal through our mural commissions, but also help area non-profits.

A unique, multi-layered initiative, our SDG campaign combines a creative mix of ingredients: the interpretive power of art, the knowledge and resources of our local academic communities, the strong will of corporate and individuals sponsors and more. This combined with the financial contributions to local nonprofit organizations, truly exemplifies the shared goals within our city, and the community who supports us.

Emerging International Journalists Program

Building on our original content expertise, we began our Emerging International Journalists Program for undergraduate & graduate students and recent graduates to tell the stories of the global work done by our Members. The program acts as a training ground and platform for new voices on international topics connected to the Philadelphia region.

Promoting Philadelphia as America's First World Heritage City

Philadelphia joined the Organization of World Heritage Cities (more info ovpm.org) in November 2015, thereby becoming the first "World Heritage City" in the United States. The city achieved this designation because we have a UNESCO World Heritage Site of "outstanding universal value", Independence Hall, and because of the rich array of historic buildings and cultural sites located throughout the city, including 67 National Historic Landmarks.

The World Heritage City designation elevates Philadelphia, giving it a new status among international cities. This achievement comes at a time when Philadelphia is evolving as a place to visit, live, and ultimately do business. We are pleased to be recognized as a city of global distinction and to join a prestigious network of 300 World Heritage Cities from around the world.

An Dynamic Hub for All Things Global in the Region

Take in a world music concert or attend an ethnic festival. Participate in a conference or symposium on an international topic at one of the region's distinguished colleges and universities or research institutes. Attend a public reception for visitors from another country or a talk by a senior foreign policy official.

There's always something for the global citizen to do in the Philadelphia region! Visit the GPA calendar to learn more.

Learn Philly Heritage

The Learn Philly Heritage website is an online resource center for anyone interested in heritage education resources and information. Our "Educating Kids with Roots" program connects you to Philadelphia world heritage info and education resources. It is administered by Global Philadelphia Association as part of the Philadelphia World Heritage Education Program.

And as if that wasn't convincing enough...

Global Philadelphia has two major events each year outside of the community work it is already involved in. The Globys Awards is the leading distinguished occasion where outstanding individual accomplishments with international implications are recognized and celebrated in six categories.

_________

The World Heritage City Celebration is the city's largest global networking event that invites internationally-minded guests and distinguished leaders from throughout our region to celebrate Philadelphia's World Heritage City status.

This year, the Global Philadelphia Association supported our World Heritage Partners in Ukraine, home to seven World Heritage Sites. We pledged to support the World Heritage City of Lviv by donating 10% of net proceeds from the 2022 World Heritage City Celebration.

_________

Global Philadelphia is the a one-stop-shop for global events in the region, but also a resource to learn about the many different cultures and communities that make Philadelphia such a great place to live. Visit our communities page to learn more!

_________

The programming that GPA does is perfect for young professionals and students looking for internships that will prepare them for a global career. From coffee hours, online networking events, and competitive year-round internship opportunities, GPA has a little bit to offer to everyone.
