Teachers Workshop Opens Discussion About Migration, Immigration, and Transformation
Global Philadelphia Association (GPA) partnered with the School District of Philadelphia and History Making Productions to host the “Migration, Immigration, and Transformation” professional development workshop for local educators on September 17, as part of the ongoing 2019 GlobalPhilly Expo. The workshop spotlighted the immigration of people coming to Philadelphia and the way this has impacted the city’s social, political, and economic structure. 
College Fest Kick-starts Philadelphia’s Fall Semester
Campus Philly hosted their annual College Fest on September 7, 2019 at Dilworth Park. As part of the 2019 Global Philly Expo, the event provided local students with an opportunity to meet an array of Philadelphia’s business leaders as they flocked back to the city for the start of the fall semester. Over 6,000 college students attended the event alongside over 45 exhibitors, including IKEA, GoPuff, Bank of America, Lyft, Chegg, and many more.
American INSIGHT Hosts the 2019 Free Speech Awards
American INSIGHT hosted its 2019 Free Speech Award Ceremony on September 22 to honor this year’s recipient, Hollywood Director Robert Greenwald, for his latest documentary, Suppressed: The Fight to Vote. The event was hosted at Cliveden of the National Trust, a historic mansion in Germantown that traces its roots back to the American Revolutionary War.

Verona: A World Heritage City
Home to many sites of historical interest, I recently had the opportunity to spend a day visiting Verona, Italy. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Verona offers a modern interpretation of the ancient traditions that formed the cornerstone of Italian culture. For example, I loved watching the crowds gather around the restaurants and vendors of the Piazza delle Erbe. As they stood waiting, visitors had the chance to take in the remains of the ornate frescoes that lined the walls of the ruling Scaligeri family’s houses during the Middle Ages.
A Hands-On Tour of The Rosenbach
With over 400,000 rare books, manuscripts, and art objects, the Rosenbach Museum contains the treasured collections of Philip Rosenbach and his younger brother A. S. W. Rosenbach. Following his brother’s death in 1953, the younger Rosenbach created the space in 1954 as a way to share both of their personal book and manuscript collections, as well as their knowledge, with the public.
Opera Philadelphia Performs a Philadelphia First
Opera Philadelphia was awarded FEDORA’s prestigious Fedora Generali award on June 28, 2019, for its innovative opera, Denis & Katya. Presented to the company during a ceremony in Venice, Opera Philadelphia is the first American company to receive this award. The Philadelphia premiere of Denis & Katya will take place on September 18th in the Suzanne Roberts Theatre, running for a total of eight performances.

UArts to Curate a Prestigious Exhibition at the Beijing International Art Biennale
Philadelphia’s University of the Arts (UArts) was selected to curate a special exhibition for the eighth Beijing International Art Biennale (BIAB), held from August 30 to September 23 at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. As one of six total exhibitions, UArts is the only representative from the United States and its exhibit will mark the first time the U.S. is highlighted at the BIAB in this fashion.

Friends Select’s SCECE Club Gives Students a More Global Perspective
Located at the heart of Center City Philadelphia, Friends Select School is home to the Student Committee for Extra-Curricular Education (SCECE), which was founded with the goal of helping students graduate with a greater appreciation for both the Philadelphia and international community, as well as the cultures and events that impact it. Through this program, rising senior Sophie Gilbert and I wanted to create a space for students to not just discuss what’s covered in our school’s curriculum but to explore their interests and have globally-minded conversations.

Rare Books Showcase at the Parkway Central Library
The Wawa Welcome America Festival kicked off on June 29, 2019, with a variety of events for all to enjoy. Some of the highlighted activities included free concerts, eating some of Philadelphia’s culinary classics, and free visits to museums across the city. In particular, the Free Library of Philadelphia opened its doors so that festival-goers could get a first-hand look at the rare books the library has to offer.
