Melody Nielsen, for GPA -- This fall, Global Philadelphia Association is showing Philadelphians the world within their own city. Kicking off on September 15 and running through November 1, GlobalPhilly™ 2013 will be the city’s first showcase of international programs and activities in Philadelphia, including arts, advocacy, commerce, and food, among others.

Philadelphia has long stood in the shadow of her northern sister, New York, and has historically gotten little credit for international involvement. GlobalPhilly™ 2013 is a sharp rebuttal to that conception, showing that the City of Brotherly Love extends its reach across the Atlantic and beyond. With over fifty participating organizations, the event hopes to illuminate the scope and size of international programming in the city, with the goal of making them visible and accessible to the public.

The variety of events ranges a wide spectrum, from theater and sports to business networking and educational programs. For every interest, it seems, there is some international component to be had in Philadelphia. Some key events include the Mural Arts World Meal, the Drexel International Squash Open, an immigration tour of the city, and a performance of International Opera Theater. Naturally, in foodie Philly, there will be a restaurant component as well, with eight participating chefs, including “Top Chef” winner Kevin Sbraga, crafting special GlobalPhilly themed entrees for their restaurants.

Beyond showcasing Philadelphia to its own citizens, GlobalPhilly™ 2013 also aims to put the city on the world stage. With a host of international businesses, organizations, and foreign students, Philly is ripe for a global exposure. GlobalPhilly™ 2013 has aspirations to heighten Philadelphia’s international reputation that might attract foreign business, visitors, and students to the area. In many ways, the event marks the beginning of a new global age for Philadelphia.
