A few weeks ago, PhillyBurbs.com reported that Philadelphia's beloved Rita's Water Ice had signed its first-ever international franchise agreement for the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. On Thursday May 2, the Philadelphia institution that opened 20 years ago in Bensalem, announced that it would open 50 stores across India over the next several years. The company is also poised to open its first two stores in China this summer, CEO Jonathan Fornaci said. Rita's will also be opening nearly two dozen new stores and a regional office in the Los Angeles area. Jared Brey, for PlanPhilly -- Asociacíon Puertorriqueños en Marcha—the Association of Puerto Ricans on the March, or APM—broke ground Tuesday morning on a mixed-use, transit-oriented development project to be known as Paseo Verde at 9th and Berks. APM plans to turn the lot into more than 100 mixed-income residential units, with retail and dining space on the ground floor. The project carries a price tag of nearly $50 million, with funding coming from City, State, SEPTA and private sources. The project was developed by APM and Jonathan Rose Companies. Friends of Chamounix Mansion International Youth Hostel gathered on March 31st for a 48th Anniversary Celebration. The benefit honored Louise and Charlie Baker, founders of Baker Industries, a nonprofit work training program, which employs high-functioning disabled individuals. The Bakers also received a tribute from the State of Pennsylvania presented by Representative Warren Kampf from the 157th District.

ArtQuilt Elements (AQE), formerly ArtQuilts at the Sedgwick, is now an international, biennial juried exhibition held at the Wayne Art Center. The exhibit runs from March 30 - May 13, 2012. The Envision Peace Museum co-sponsored the 2012 Awards Ceremony honoring Dr. Helen Caldicott as the recipient of the 4th Annual Haas Award for International Peace and Social Justice. The Envision Peace Museum fosters insight into the meanings and roots of peace while empowering visitors to overcome violence and injustice in their lives and in the world. On April 3, GPA Executive Director, Zabeth Teelucksingh, attended the Scandinavian Business Values Symposium organized and hosted by International House Philadelphia. A panel of six Senior Executives from the Philadelphia area spoke on the Scandinavian way to do business. Zabeth summarizes the key points discussed during this lively forum. She also offers insight into why Philadelphia serves as such fertile ground for Scandinavian business culture.

Mr. Gonzales is a lawyer and founding partner of the Gonzales Tiagha law firm in Philadelphia and also served in the Solicitor's Office for the City of Philadelphia. He now serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians, a nonprofit economic development organization that connects immigrants, employers, and communities across the Philadelphia region.
