Anastasia Shown is a Social Studies, Humanities and Global Education Teacher at Monteverde Friends School. She is a Global Education and Community Outreach Consultant at the University of Pennsylvania.
Prior to this she worked as the Assistant Director of the Africa Center. Over the last 9 years, she has expanded the network of Penn's Africa, Middle East, South Asia and East Asia Centers from a handful of local public partners to hundreds of K-12 schools, colleges, nonprofits, professional associations and government agencies in Philadelphia, the nation and abroad.
She fulfilled her B.A. at Indiana University and the University of Ghana, majoring in Women Studies and Sociology. She earned her Master of Social Work degree at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Social Policy & Practice. She co-created the International Development Summer Institute, a service learning program in Ghana. She's conducted field work in Ghana through Penn Med's Global Health Framework and in Cameroon through the Global Water Alliance and Engineers without Borders. She was awarded the Global Young Advocate Award by the United Nations Association of America, a Fulbright-Hays grant to train U.S. educators in Ethiopia, the Centennial Partner Award by International House Philadelphia and the inaugural Globy Award for Educational Leadership by Global Philadelphia Association. She is an alumni of Up with People International. Anastasia serves on the Board of Directors for the United Nations Association of Greater Philadelphia and the Global Philadelphia Association.
