Date:
Thursday, September 14, 2023 - 5:30pm - 7:30pm
Location:
Freeman’s 2400 Market Street
Philadelphia, PA 19103
United States

Join the British American Business Council of Greater Philadelphia for a post-summer networking event and reception at Freeman’s, America’s oldest auction house, for an evening of art, bourbon, and transatlantic business development. Freeman’s has been part of the auction world and art market for more than 215 years. They are currently active on five international bidding platforms.

In 2000, Freeman’s formed a strategic marketing alliance with Scotland’s oldest auction house, Lyon & Turnbull. Freeman’s works closely with Lyon & Turnbull to promote objects and collections in Europe and beyond. This connection boosts exposure and sales potential of their auctions in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia.

Operating since 1826, Lyon & Turnbull is one of the longest established fine art and antiques auction houses in the United Kingdom. Alasdair Nichol, Chairman, Head of Fine Art, Head of Department, Modern and Contemporary Art at Freeman’s will speak about the current art and international auction market; the strong relationship between Freeman’s and Lyon & Turnbull; and the longstanding cultural and artistic ties between the US and the UK.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Alasdair studied fine art at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen. He later graduated with a master’s degree from the University of Ulster in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In 1985, he embarked on his career in the auction world in Edinburgh before moving to Glasgow, where he organized the first sale of Scottish contemporary art at the world-renowned Glasgow School of Art. He subsequently moved to a flagship saleroom in London where he specialized in Modern and Impressionist art before transferring to New York as Head of Fine Art in 1997. Since 1998 he has been a familiar face on the top-rated PBS television program Antiques Roadshow.

On display will be a single owner fine art collection, comprised mostly of American artists with a focus on Pennsylvania impressionists, along with select highlights from upcoming auctions related to regional and UK topics. Single-owner sales and selling fresh-to-market and academically significant works from private collections is considered one of Freeman’s strongest areas of achievement. Three specialty bourbons – one from the UK, one from Kentucky and one distilled in Kentucky, shipped via Atlantic Ocean vessel and then matured in England – will be presented and served.

We look forward to welcoming you for a very special evening including a bourbon tasting, canapes, networking, and a fascinating discussion about the international auction world. Sponsorship opportunities available. Contact babc@babcphl.com for more information.
