This premiere event is in recognition of the inauguration of the UNESCO -- Penn Chair in Learning and Literacy.

Mrs. Bokova has served as Director-General of UNESCO since November 2009. She is the first woman to have been elected head of the Organization. She also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador of Bulgaria, where she was responsible for human rights issues. Later, as a deputy of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (1990-1991 and 2001-2005), she participated in the drafting of Bulgaria’s new Constitution, which contributed significantly to the country’s accession to the European Union.
