Artist Talk with Lisa Brice On-Site & Online Talk | Member Appreciation Days

Members are invited to join South African artist Lisa Brice for a talk about her work and practice. Her paintings challenge traditional depictions of the female nude and the often-misogynistic nature of historical figuration—typically painted by white men for white men—by taking ownership of how women are portrayed. Acknowledging the parameters of art history, Brice’s works echo iconic compositions by artists such as Degas, Manet, Picasso, and Vallotton but lend their protagonists agency and self-possession. Members are invited to join us on-site in the Comcast NBCUniversal Auditorium or online via livestream. Online registrants will be emailed a link to access the talk on Thursday, December 1.

Speaker: Lisa Brice

Brice is a painter and visual artist from Cape Town, South Africa. Based in London, she draws inspiration from her years living and working in South Africa, Trinidad, and England as well as her printmaking experience and work as a studio assistant to fellow South African artist Sue Williamson during the politically volatile mid-to-late 1980s and early 1990s. Brice’s work is featured in collections worldwide, including the Tate and South African High Commission in London; the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Washington DC; and the South African National Gallery, Cape Town.
