Virtual Lecture on Defying Putin

On Wednesday, October 14th at 11:00 A.M., the Parkway Central Branch of the Free Library will be offering a free, virtual lecture on Crowdcast called: “Defying Putin: The Dangers and Opportunities in Opposing Russia’s President.” The speaker for this program is Dr. Benjamin Nathans, a historian from the University of Pennsylvania who is an expert on both the Soviet Union and contemporary Russia. He led an international committee of scholars who helped to shape the content for the Museum of Jewish History in Moscow.

Bad things happen to people that Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin dislikes. Aleksi Navalny, the most important leader of Russia’s opposition, still faces a long recovery in a German hospital after drinking a cup of poisoned tea. On February 27, 2015, Boris Nemtsov, a liberal politician who was steadfast in opposing Putin, was assassinated on a bridge near the Kremlin. When a poisoned beverage failed to dispatch the courageous journalist and author Anna Polikovskaya, she was shot to death in an elevator two years later. Politifact, the respected fact checking service of the Poynter Institute, estimates that 34 Russian journalists have been killed since 2000.
