The 19^th annual Global Solutions Lab will be June 18-30 at Drexel University in Philadelphia, hosted by Drexel’s Office of Global Engagement and The Environmental Collaboratory. This year’s Lab will be both in-person at Drexel University and online. As in previous years, Lab participants will be from all over the world, be briefed by UN and other experts on the state of the world, and work in cross-cultural, interdisciplinary, multinational, and inter-generational Design Teams on developing designs and plans for reaching the UN Sustainable Development Goals—real solutions to real world problems.

Architectural Historian Michael J. Lewis will trace the roots and development of Philadelphia’s private and public libraries.

The Quakers who founded Philadelphia believed in universal literacy and were great creators of libraries. The first was the Library Company, which Benjamin Franklin helped establish in 1731 and which was America’s first subscription library. But Quakers also believed that knowledge should be useful, and gave their libraries a pragmatic character unlike those of any other American city.
