Will the next Mayor of Philadelphia think globally?

Today, the Global Philadelphia Association (GPA) hosted a Mayoral Forum at International House Philadelphia. It was attended by candidates Lynne Abraham and Nelson Diaz and by representatives of Jim Kenney and Anthony Williams. The intent was to equip participants with highly-relevant information on Philadelphia’s international strengths and challenges. The GPA is convinced that the sooner that Philadelphia realizes its full promise as a global city the sooner it will enjoy positive effects on its economy and jobs, trade and tourism, education and For this to happen, having a globally-minded mayor is vital.

What does globalization have to do with an election for mayor of Philadelphia? Answer: Everything.

With the future of Philadelphia as a global city in mind, the Global Philadelphia Association (GPA) hosted a Mayoral Forum on May 11, 2015 at International House.

The forum was moderated by well-known broadcaster Steve Highsmith of PHL 17. It was covered by the media, giving the candidates an opportunity to gain recognition for their campaigns and the public an opportunity to hear their views one week before election day.

The forum was organized by the GPA to take advantage of the international expertise that resides within the organizations, businesses, colleges and universities, and globally-minded individuals that make up the Association’s membership.

The intent was to equip participants with highly-relevant information in a short amount of time on Philadelphia’s international strengths and challenges, and how they affect such key issues as the economy and jobs, trade and tourism, educating for a global world, and immigration and maintaining Philadelphia as a world class city.

It was devoted to providing the candidates with an opportunity to set forth their understandings and views on international and national community issues. The ability to utilize an international perspective in addressing them will be of critical value, both to them and to the citizens they serve.
