Co-sponsored by Crossroads Music, Sruti, and the Penn South Asia Center Harsh Narayan is a leading sarangi (Indian string instrument played with a bow) player, teacher and performer of Hindustani (north Indian classical) music.

The Pakistani state is weak -- unable to fully control all of its own territory -- yet it has a sizable nuclear arsenal. It has been a significant ally of the United States in many respects, yet equally significant segments of the Pakistani population are increasingly Islamist and anti-American.

As the role of contested spaces in the social, economic and political life of modern South Asia continues to transform vis-a-vis the expansion of global capitalism, (neo)liberal economic policies, the rise of historically marginalized political movements, transformations of the Indian economy and media, and the expansion of local and transnational organizations, this conference brings together prominent faculty engaged in re-theorizing space in an increasingly globalized region to discuss developments in the field as well as to chart future avenues for research.

The Center for the Advanced Study of India at the University of Pennsylvania presents a lecture by Steven I. Wilkinson. India and Pakistan, like many colonies at independence, inherited ethnically imbalanced militaries that were felt by many to be a threat to democracy, and at odds with the new national identities their leaders hoped to create. This lecture, using new data, examines how India and Pakistan dealt with these challenges, and explores, particularly, the question of how India could largely retain its colonial military structure while at the same time preserving and deepening its democracy, while Pakistan’s colonial military caused many more problems for its democracy.
