The Mid-Atlantic-Eurasia Business Council (MAEBC/MARBC) is pleased to announce the Days of Eurasian-American Innovation Entrepreneurship Cooperation (RAVC Fall 2017), which will take place in Philadelphia, PA and the Mid-Atlantic Region from October 30th to November 9th.

Discover the hidden historical connection between the 1876 Centennial Exposition’s Japanese Bazaar and Shofuso’s location in Fairmount Park. In this walking tour and lecture, we will visit Memorial Hall, Shofuso and the Sakura Pavilion to learn about the history of the centennial and the current archaeological excavation taking place at the footprint of the bazaar. The program will end with a talk by a member of the archaeological team AECOM and the opportunity to see artifacts that have been found to date. An informal wine and cheese reception will conclude the program.

National Public Gardens Day is an annual celebration of the nation’s public gardens to raise awareness of the important role botanical gardens and arboreta play in promoting environmental stewardship, plant and water conservation, green spaces, and education in communities nationwide. Shofuso offers garden tours throughout the day, with special tours led by Head Gardener Franceska Snyder at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm, as our azaleas reach peak bloom.

Al Benner from Moss Acres will again join us to give a lecture on moss, including some new up and coming products involving green walls and roofs. Participants then have the opportunity to work with moss during the hands-on portion of the workshop. At the conclusion, if weather permits, there will be exclusive pre-season access to Shofuso’s garden. Please note, this programming begins in the Horticultural Center’s Dixon Room. Family See and Make Afternoons by Shofuso: Drop by first Sundays (November through March) from 12:30pm to 2:30pm to try your hand at various arts from Japan. A variety of activities and demos will be on offer throughout the afternoon.

This spring, Philadelphia's beautiful flowering trees will come into bloom for Sakura Matsuri - the Cherry Blossom Festival. A program of the Japan America Society of Greater Philadephia (JASGP), the Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia is an initiative to encourage a better understanding of the cultural, social, and educational customs of Japan and the United States. Set under the blossoming canopy of Philadelphia’s cherry trees, this Festival is a chance to experience a centuries-old tradition that celebrates the fleeting splendor of spring like no other. Join tens of thousands in savoring the fruits of Japan’s rich cultural heritage before the flowers fall!

Presenter and Pennsylvania Bonsai Society member Howard McNeal has worked with bonsai for more than 50 years. Each participant in this small group will learn training, wiring, potting, and caring for a new bonsai, providing long-term guidance after they take their bonsai home. Reservations are required.

Enjoy a traditional Japanese tea ceremony led by the Urasenke tea master at the Shofuso Japanse House and Garden. Experience the beautiful, authentic setting, while sitting on tatami mats or chairs. Learn about the history and traditions of the chanoyu (tea ceremony), drink a bowl of matcha (green tea) and taste some seasonal sweets. Shoes must be removed before stepping into the house, so please be prepared to bring socks and kneel or sit on the floor for the length of the ceremony. Space is limited and advanced reservations are required. $30 for Non-members/$25 for Members.
