Philadelphia was buzzing with community clean-ups, relief efforts, resource gathering, and services last month during Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The Global Philadelphia Association (GPA) eagerly engages in an annual service opportunity in partnership with local organizations that are creating meaningful change in the city.

To many, Philadelphia’s history lies in its Revolutionary-era activities. To the Global Philadelphia Association (GPA), its history lies in the storied contributions of community members originating from across the globe. Previous anniversary celebrations have focused on the city as the birthplace of American independence. Now that the 250th anniversary of 1776 is approaching, Philadelphia250 has a mission to create the most inclusive and innovative anniversary in America’s history.

Last December, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA) announced that Eric Pryor would be appointed as president of the historic museum and college. Pryor’s role began in early January. 

This year’s global education Summer Institute, an annual week-long professional development program for teachers hosted by Penn’s National Resource Centers since 2005 (South Asia Center, Center for East Asian Studies, Middle East Center, Africa Center) focused on Philadelphia’s bid to become the first World Heritage City in the United States.

City Hall proclaimed May 16 "Campus Philly Day." To celebrate, the organization's leadership gathered in the Conversation Hall to discuss their ten year history of encouraging local students to study, explore, live and work in the region.

From April to June, International House Philadelphia (3701 Chestnut St.) is hosting the work of Brazilian photographer Daniel Gafanhoto as part of their 53rd Global Gala: Colors of Brazil.

With help from their Women's Committee, the Penn Museum has put together "Culinary Expeditions: A Celebration of Food and Culture," illustrated with historical objects from the museum's holdings. The full-color, hardcover journey through the world of food is available May 5, with proceeds benefiting the museum.
