Description: This block-long alley was opened between 1702 and 1704 by mutual agreement of two adjoining landowners on Front Street. It now survives as the oldest unchanged and continuously inhabited street in Philadelphia. Its narrow two- and three-story dwellings, their facades flush on the narrow sidewalks, were occupied by artisans and tradesmen and are remarkable survivors of colonial America’s largest city. The Elfreth’s Alley Association, established in 1934, safeguards the unique character of this charming urban enclave, a living vestige of the past.
