On Wednesday, October 14th at 11:00 A.M., the Parkway Central Branch of the Free Library will be offering a free, virtual lecture on Crowdcast called: “Defying Putin: The Dangers and Opportunities in Opposing Russia’s President.” The speaker for this program is Dr. Benjamin Nathans, a historian from the University of Pennsylvania who is an expert on both the Soviet Union and contemporary Russia. He led an international committee of scholars who helped to shape the content for the Museum of Jewish History in Moscow.

This event is a discussion with Mikhail Kozyrev, a prominent Russian journalist, music critic, and a producer, and Hunter Heaney, Executive Director of the Voice Project, an advocacy group focused on promoting freedom of artistic expression as an agent of social change (http://voiceproject.org/).

The Mid-Atlantic-Eurasia Business Council (MAEBC/MARBC) is pleased to announce the Days of Eurasian-American Innovation Entrepreneurship Cooperation (RAVC Fall 2017), which will take place in Philadelphia, PA and the Mid-Atlantic Region from October 30th to November 9th.

In April 2016, computer technicians at the Democratic National Committee discovered that someone had accessed the organization’s computer servers and conducted a theft that is best described as Watergate 2.0. In the weeks that followed, the nation’s top computer security experts discovered that the cyber thieves had helped themselves to everything: sensitive documents, emails, donor information, even voice mails.

Putin's government is usually associated with incompetence and corruption. Yet, the Kremlin has managed to deploy power so ruthlessly at home and abroad in part because of its ability to muster economic resources. Miller traces the economic policies that underwrite Russia's expansive foreign policy and Putin's continued control over  the country's political system.

December 2016 marked the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Soviet Union. 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of Soviet Russia. Both dates give reason to reexamine the history of Eurasia, a vast region with many ethnic groups and multiple religions, at times united under authoritarian governments, at other times divided between dozens of countries.
