In the first century BC, the Roman historian Sallust wrote that the republic had descended into internal strife because of the destruction of its enemy, Carthage, in the Third Punic War. Fear of the enemy, or metus hostilis, produced domestic cohesion. Without an adversary, Romans turned their knives inward: “when the minds of the people were relieved of that dread [of Carthage], wantonness and arrogance naturally arose.”

The Dialogue Institute is hosting a free* lecture and discussion with Dr. Ziad Fahed, “Fostering Youth Resilience to Counteract Extremism: Grassroots Experience from Philadelphia to Lebanon,” .

The Dialogue Institute, along with the Temple University Departments of History and Religion, is sponsoring a teach-in at Temple focused on Lebanon's uprising, its socio-political impact and the ensuing rise of grassroots journalism.

New York Times journalist, Anemona Hartocollis, has been chosen as the National Resource Centers’ Global Distinguished Lecturer for 2016. In her talk she will discuss her experience following a group of migrants and refugees from the Greek Island of Kos to Denmark. She will explore the struggles, hopes and desires of people she met along the way and ponder the unknown outcomes of this mass exodus from the Middle East and North Africa.

Breakfast with Professor Uzi Rabi, as he discusses Prime Minister Netanyahu’s reelection, nuclear negotiations with Iran, the war against ISIS, tumult from Syria to Iraq and Yemen, and the status of the perennial Palestinian/Israeli conflict – and how the U.S. and Israel might come to terms on these volatile issues.
