Under the leadership of Dr. Julie Mostov, Vice Provost for Global Initiatives, The Office of International Programs, brings leadership, strategic coordination, and institutional structure to the global dimension of Drexel University. The OIP facilitates multidisciplinary international programs across the university by bringing together stakeholders in a Council of International Programs. It enhances the international education of Drexel’s colleges and other academic units through partnerships with carefully selected international universities, and promotes global awareness and visibility through a Global Research and Academic Network (GRAND), International Travel Awards for faculty and graduate students, and student programming.

The work of OIP and its partners reflect concerns with global issues in science and technology, politics, economics, and culture; awareness of the benefits of international learning experiences and research collaboration; and the need to attract international scholars and students to the US. Drexel’s international focus recognizes the benefits of studying and working abroad, and the creative synergy that comes from exchanges of students and scholars from all over the world. The Office of International Programs provides Drexel with the infrastructure necessary to take advantage of international opportunities and proactively address global challenges.

Drexel is committed to creating opportunities for learning about global citizenship and acquiring the skills to understand and navigate global networks and local resources. It encourages such initiatives as an Annual Student Conference on Global Challenges; International Cafes for faculty/student discussion of contemporary issues; modern language practice through language cafes and conversation networks; film series with Women’s Studies, Africana Studies, and Multicultural Affairs; and programming through international student organizations and multidisciplinary groups across the campus.

Some of the offices and programs that make up “Global Drexel” include:

Collaboration with campuses and research networks around the world are flourishing. The Modern Languages department at Drexel University takes a communicative approach to language learning. It seeks to foster both foreign language competence and students’ knowledge of different cultures by using a multidisciplinary approach to the study of language. Language study also gives Drexel students access to a world of opportunities through study and internships abroad and international cooperative education placements. Drexel offers instruction in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Russian and Spanish.

The English Language Center (ELC) has courses for matriculated and non-matriculated students including academic English, pre-MBA preparation, TOEFL preparation, conversation, and courses for international teaching assistants. The Center sponsors exchange activities between U.S. and international students as well as trips and activities open to the university community.

International Students and Scholars Services (ISSS) offers a vast array of programs and services to more than 1,800 international students, scholars, and faculty. ISSS works to promote meaningful interaction between United States citizens and nationals of other countries by organizing cultural enrichment opportunities for all members of the Drexel community.
