This year will be the first virtual Solas Awards and while it will be different from past events, we are excited to be able to welcome everyone to join us in experiencing The Welcoming Center. During Solas 2021, you will have the opportunity to virtually network with others in The Welcoming Center community, learn more about the impact your support has on immigrants in Philadelphia, and watch a live conversation with our 2021 Solas Award honoree, Dr. José Ramón Fernández-Peña hosted by our friend and former colleague, Amanda Bergson-Shilcock.

How does intergenerational trauma in Asian and Pacific Islander (API) immigrant communities shape our relationships to labor, including intimate, familial, and emotional labor? How do we define our worth in the context of political erasure, economic necessity, and inherited patterns of gendered violence? How do we accept and remake our difficult inheritances? Five API poets share original work to explore these questions.

The Welcome Reception introduces international students and scholars to the Philadelphia area and to the rich network of global communities and resources in the region. The event is provided free of charge to international students and scholars from universities in the Delaware Valley region, featuring live multicultural performances and cuisine.

Diplomatic Language Services, founded in 1985 in Arlington, VA, provides high-quality language services (language instruction, linguist support services, curriculum development, foreign language proficiency testing, etc.) to government, military, and commercial clients. While many of our opportunities involve working in the metro Washington, DC area, we are also currently looking for experienced language instructors who would be open to future teaching opportunities in the Philadelphia and Trenton areas.

Join more than 1000 guests for the International Student Reception on October 17, 2014, 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Penn Museum. This signature event, celebrating its 45th year, includes music and dance performances, networking with people from around the world, and introductions to local resources.
