Amid a gathering of supporters from various sectors, Women’s Campaign International held a fundraiser in Rittenhouse Square beneath the heading “All the Difference in the World: Philadelphia Celebrates Women’s Leadership.” The September 19 event specifically recognized the contributions of Mayor Michael Nutter and Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown to empowering girls and women in Philadelphia. Both figures from city government were on hand to speak about the importance of ensuring that opportunities for women’s personal growth are made widely available.

Leaders in Christian theology were joined by representatives of the fields of Philadelphia business and law to examine modes of ethics in modernizing societies at a September 14 lecture at Temple University. Presented by the Dialogue Institute, a globally-recognized center for interreligious exchange of ideas and study founded by Dr. Leonard Swidler, the keynote address was delivered by Austrian Professor Dr. Ingeborg Gabriel. Dr. Gabriel serves as Chair of the Department of Social Ethics and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Roman Catholic Theology at the University of Vienna.

Speaking with Global Philadelphia Association, Dr. Swidler illuminated the many fascinating aspects of his work, including why interreligious dialogue is essential for peace in our world.

On September 10, the Philadelphia Global Initiative on the Rule of Law celebrated the 10th anniversary of the International Criminal Court with a conference at the Free Library of Philadelphia. A panel of ambassadors and legal experts discussed the future of the ICC, the organization formed in 2002 with the passage of the Rome Statute to prosecute perpetrators of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity when their countries cannot or will not.

Kathy Quigley for GPA -- In August, 21 teachers convened for a week of training and discussions at the University of Pennsylvania’s campus for the annual Summer Teacher Institute. Hosted by four UPenn centers, all of which are Global Philadelphia Association members, the annual Summer Institute provides a forum for professional educators from the Greater Philadelphia region to examine methods of teaching global affairs.
